Milan Design Week 2019 – 6 Personal Picks by Giulia Zanini

By ChihChi Wang

Milan Design Week is definitely one of the most sought-after events in the town. Different from Fashion Weeks, this event is much more “friendly” to the public. Presentations, special installations, unexpected interactives from brands (fashion and non) to all the people. The city becomes a giant amusement park in those days. People from the world all come together to enjoy the environment, to capture the first-hand news in design and to admire new technologies. Not to mention the great opportunity to visit those historic buildings which normally with the entrance carefully (heavily) guarded!
Yeah, you know, therefore so much information and happenings suddenly explore in a short time, for people who are not really well prepared, or are not working in the related industries, it’s always very difficult to catch the real essence of this event. I always remember how I proceeded my MDW last year by following Instagram stories of Giulia Zanini, a Crema born girl who lives in Milano for 7 years. It was a great help, especially for people lazy like me, and do-not-know-how-to-start like me!

So this year, instead of keeping her “city scout talent” only for myself (and for her followers on social of course), we got this super honor to have her as FRUFRUTTI’s special correspondent and to share with us the 6 most beautiful presentations, in her opinion, of Milan Design Week 2019!

#1 GUCCI DÉCOR

Anticipating a few days before the Design Week, Gucci inaugurated the Gucci Décor temporary store represented the brand’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s aesthetics to the home decoration. The shop is organized on two floors and will be available to visit until the end of June 2019. You’ll find the brand’s furniture collection, furnishing accessories, porcelain, wallpaper and separè, all decorated with floral and faunal motifs. La Casa delle Meraviglie!

IF YOU HAVE HOUSES LOCATING IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD, WHICH CITY WHERE THE HOUSE IS WILL YOU DECORATE THIS COLLECTION?

GZ: Although Gucci is an Italian brand, its home décor style makes me think of a house in the English countryside, I would say a house in Dorset.

WICH PART OF THE HOUSE WILL YOU TAKE THIS COLLECTION FOR INTERIOR DECORATING?

GZ: Definitely the living room because I could have fun with velvet curtains, the screen, cushions … I imagine myself sitting in front of the fireplace with a nice Gucci blanket!

#2 VERSACE HOME

The house of Gianni Versace becomes the set for the presentation of the new Versace Home Collection, which debuts at the FuoriSalone 2019 with an installation signed by interior designer Sasha Bikoff and by the artist Andy Dixon. A setting reminiscent of Miami, with pink, blue and green neon lights that illuminate furnishings from the past Versace Home collections reinterpreted by Sasha Bikoff. Going upstairs of Versace house in Milan, there are huge shirts created by the Canadian artist Andy Dixon. The most pop piece is the polyethylene armchair with the iconic Medusa-shaped backrest.

The collection celebrates the iconic Pequin striped pattern introduced for the first time by Fendi in 1987. Outside the center and away from the hustle and bustle, Marras is a must-to-go place for a little break from the turmoil of Design Week. For a deliberate choice, space of which is hidden in a former garage, it’s not only a shop but also a bookstore and a bistro bar. Chipped walls, old-fashioned furniture, and refined ceramics, a beautiful courtyard and also pieces made with salvaged objects, such as the large bookcase made of wooden drawers from a factory. A place to relax!

In the Design week, Fornasetti presented its new collection of eleven extraordinary rugs woven with the finest silks and wools, accompanied by ceramic cats, magic tables and cabinets of different sizes. The new objects are the result of the union between the visionary imagination of the brand’s Milanese atelier and the traditional craftsmanship. A unique and visionary space not to be missed.
